Principle 8: Accept Limitations

Understand the limitations of email clients and only agree to accept the shortcomings if emails remain functional and the content is available in full.

Different email clients, webmail clients, and apps used across different operating systems will interpret the code of emails in their own way.

Some systems will display custom fonts differently or not at all, while others may remove specific HTML elements and attributes and CSS. This variety in interpretation makes it impossible to display an email in the same way to everyone. These limitations of email clients are acceptable, but only if the email remains legible, functional and the content is available in full.

Practices

  • Webfonts: Provide fallback fonts to ensure that the email content is comfortable to read. Please note, that NBS custom fonts do not display on some devices and email clients, e.g. Android.
  • Design features: Accept that some design features (e.g. rounded corners) may not display in some email clients; however, this does not detract from the content and messages conveyed in the email.
  • Length: Keep the length of emails as short and concise as possible but be aware this cannot be accurately controlled, as people will apply different display settings on their devices and in their email clients.
